László Toroczkai, chairman of the Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Homeland Movement), said on ATV’s political talk show Egyenes Beszéd (Straight Talk) that his party will formally contest the election results, arguing that Meta's unprecedented interference enabled Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party to achieve such strong results. Mi Hazánk is at a particular disadvantage, as its chairman is barred from having a Facebook page, making it significantly harder for the party to reach voters. If the EU was able to pressure Romania last year over alleged social media interference, as in the case of George Simion, will it act against Facebook’s censorship and interference on a scale never seen before?
"Facebook made a prime minister out of Péter Magyar," Toroczkai told host Egon Rónai on his ATV program.
"I called it. We now have a three-party Parliament," the Mi Hazánk chairman declared on ATV, adding that despite the exceptionally high voter turnout, his party performed well, winning more votes than in the previous election. He noted that the pull of the two larger parties was clearly felt but believes Mi Hazánk has far greater untapped potential than this result shows.
"This was not a clean campaign," the party chairman stressed, reminding viewers that they had said all along they would challenge the results, and that they will follow through, citing Meta's interference.
Toroczkai said he is the only parliamentary party leader in Hungary barred from having a Facebook or Instagram page, calling this level of interference in the elections simply unacceptable. A Hungarian court has already issued a final ruling ordering Meta to restore his page. The tech giant has simply ignored it.
"We will keep fighting Meta, because this election proves that Facebook made Péter Magyar prime minister," he said. He noted that he too had traveled the country holding campaign events, but that it is far harder to do when you cannot advertise those events on Facebook.
Toroczkai announced that on Tuesday the party will file a formal objection with the Hungarian National Election Committee (Nemzeti Választási Bizottság) over campaign misconduct. If the committee rules against them, they will take the case to the Kúria, Hungary's Supreme Court. If that fails as well, they will go to the Hungarian Constitutional Court or to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The official results will not be certified until May 4th, when the National Election Committee will formally announce the outcome. Mi Hazánk intends to appeal regardless, he added, calling it a moral obligation.
On Péter Magyar's pledge to rewrite the laws so that Viktor Orbán could never again serve as prime minister, Toroczkai was blunt:
"That means only two of us remain as candidates for prime minister, since Orbán would be barred from running."
That puts the weight squarely on him, he said. If Magyar ends up badly damaging the country, he added, "I will be his challenger."
"And none of that will be possible without Facebook, so this battle has to go on," he said, returning to the subject of Meta.
