At Thursday's government press briefing, the outlet 444 asked Gergely Gulyás whether Hungary would provide military assistance to the United States in the liberation of the Strait of Hormuz if Donald Trump were to request it. Gulyás, head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said Trump has made no such request, but added that “if he were to ask, we would consider it,” though for now the government has no intention of engaging with the issue, Telex reports.
Hungary is a NATO member, and Trump has already asked the alliance for support, but Gulyás said that is for the NATO Secretary General to address. The government does not deal with “hypothetical requests” that have not even been articulated yet, Gulyás said, on the question of any potential assistance to the American president.
Only countries with a naval fleet could play any part in securing the Strait of Hormuz, Gulyás noted, adding that Hungary’s military simply has no role to play there.
The minister said that “if the question of military participation arises within NATO, Hungary will take a position.”
The Hungarian government has not condemned the war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel. Prime Minister Orbán Viktor said in a Wednesday interview about Donald Trump: “The question is whether he started a war or initiated peace. That has not yet been decided; historians will be the ones to settle it.”
Several European NATO members have said they will not provide military support to the war being waged by Israel and the United States. Poland, Spain, and Finland are among those who have taken this stance.
Toroczkai calls for Gulyás to resign
László Toroczkai, chairman of Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Homeland Movement), called for Gulyás to resign in a post on X.

“Gergely Gulyás, Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office, must resign after stating publicly that Hungary would consider entering the war against Iran!” he wrote.
Toroczkai added that, in his view, it makes no difference whether Hungary is drawn into conflict in the interests of Ukraine or Israel, and said his party rejects sending Hungarian soldiers abroad under any circumstances.
